What are motorized blinds and motorized window shades?

They are custom window coverings operated by an electric motor rather than a manual cord or chain. Depending on the selected system, they may be controlled by remote, wall control, compatible app, schedule, voice assistant or a broader smart-home platform.

Do I need a hub to use motorized shades?

A handheld remote can typically operate a compatible motor without a hub. App control, schedules, voice commands and integrations generally require the correct hub or bridge, a supported motor and a suitable home network.

Can I control each shade separately and as a group?

Yes, compatible multi-channel remotes and connected systems can control individual shades, rooms or groups. The final grouping and number of channels are planned during specification and programming.

Will the shades still work if Wi-Fi is unavailable?

Remote operation generally does not rely on Wi-Fi once the remote and motor are paired. App, cloud, voice and some scheduled functions may be unavailable until the home network or internet connection returns.

Can motorized shades work with Alexa, Google Home or other smart-home systems?

Compatible systems may integrate with supported smart-home platforms through the correct hub, account and network setup. Compatibility varies by motor family and platform version, so it should be confirmed before ordering.

Should I choose rechargeable or hardwired motors?

Rechargeable motors suit many finished homes and retrofit projects. Hardwired systems are worth planning for new construction, major renovations, larger groups and windows where concealed continuous power is preferred.

How often do rechargeable shades need charging?

Which window coverings can be motorized?

Are motorized shades suitable for large or hard-to-reach windows?

They are often a strong option for high, wide or difficult-to-access windows, but motor capacity, tube size, shade weight, power and mounting structure must be checked for the specific opening.

We have a vaulted ceiling with a tall arched window that didn’t allow us to place a conventional rod. While searching through Instagram I came across window coverings that Sunny shutters had done that would solve our problems as we have a baby on the way and wanted the room to be a lot darker during the summer months. I messaged them on Instagram and was told Lynn would reach out. She called me promptly and asked me to send her measurements and was about to provide a rough quote. The week after she made the long drive to Cambridge and we finalized the quote (which stayed the same as my measurements were accurate) and I picked the fabric colour and rod. She gave me some really good tips as to how we should set up the curtains for maximum light blocking. It took a few weeks as I wasn’t going to be ready for installation right away and the fabric was back ordered for a few weeks but the process in waiting was great. Lynn always answered my questions and communication was clear. Installation day was extremely smooth. It took an hour and a half and everything was organized, quick and the house was left completely clean. Prior to the man leaving he asked me to come see everything and showed me how to wrap each panel. My husband and I are wowed by the work they did. The whole room looks so much more luxurious and last night was the first time we slept well without the light waking us up at 5:30 am. Thank you so much to the team.
