Blinds Installation Guide
A practical guide to installing custom roller shades, zebra blinds, solar shades, honeycomb shades and compatible cassette headrails. Identify the mount type first, use the hardware supplied with your order and follow any product-specific instructions included in the package.
The short answer
Most cassette shades follow one basic sequence.
Install the brackets level and into a suitable surface, hook the front lip of the cassette onto the brackets, then rotate the headrail upward until it locks. Bracket style, fasteners, spacing, controls and safety components vary by product.
Important: This page is a general guide for common Sunny Shutter systems. The hardware and instructions packed with your order take priority. Do not drill until you have confirmed the ordered mount type, bracket orientation and mounting surface.
Before you start
A clean installation begins before the first hole.
Open one package at a time, keep the order label with the shade and protect the fabric while you confirm the mounting surface and hardware.
Match every shade to its window.
- Confirm room, width, height and quantity.
- Verify inside or outside mount.
- Check control side and operating type.
- Inspect the cassette, fabric and hardware.
- Stop if the product label does not match the opening.
Use the right tools for the surface.
- Tape measure, pencil and level.
- Drill, suitable bits and screwdriver.
- Correct screws or anchors for the substrate.
- Stable step stool or ladder.
- Eye protection and a clear work area.
Fasteners are not universal.
- Wood framing may accept suitable wood screws.
- Drywall may require anchors or framing behind it.
- Concrete or masonry needs the correct bit and anchor.
- Metal frames require compatible fasteners.
- Do not guess where wiring or plumbing may be hidden.
Mount type first
Inside mount and outside mount are not interchangeable.
The ordered width, deductions, light gaps, bracket orientation and required clearance depend on the mount type selected when the shade was measured.
Inside mount
The shade sits within the window recess. Common cassette brackets fasten upward into the top of the recess, subject to the bracket and opening.
- Confirm sufficient depth and a flat mounting surface.
- Keep the cassette clear of handles and screens.
- Expect small side light gaps on many shade systems.
Outside mount
The shade covers the opening and brackets fasten to the casing or wall above it. The ordered overlap helps manage light and privacy.
- Confirm the finished width and centring before drilling.
- Use suitable anchors when framing is unavailable.
- Check that the cassette clears trim and obstructions.
Do not change the mount type during installation without checking the order dimensions. An inside-mount product may be too narrow for an outside mount, while an outside-mount product may not fit inside the recess.
Common cassette installation
Bracket, hook, rotate, lock.
These steps apply to many roller, zebra and solar shade cassettes. Stop and use the product-specific instructions if your brackets, headrail or control system differ from the diagrams supplied with the order.
Wide or heavy shades: Use every bracket supplied and obtain help lifting the cassette. Never place a bracket where it interferes with a motor, clutch, end cap, internal mechanism or fabric roll.
Match the shade and inspect the package.
Confirm the order label, mount type, control side and hardware. Keep the fabric wrapped or protected while positioning the cassette.
Dry-position the brackets.
Place the brackets in their intended orientation, away from mechanisms and end caps. Follow the supplied diagram for bracket quantity and spacing.
Mark a level bracket line.
Use a tape measure and level. For an outside mount, centre the ordered width over the opening. For an inside mount, confirm equal front setback where appropriate.
Drill pilot holes and secure the brackets.
Use bits, screws and anchors suitable for the mounting substrate. Tighten the brackets so they sit flat and do not twist.
Engage and lock the cassette.
Holding the shade securely, hook the front lip of the cassette onto the front of each bracket. Rotate the back upward until every latch clicks or locks in place.
Test the full travel and finish safely.
Operate the shade slowly through a complete cycle. Confirm it is level, clears the opening and remains secure. Install all supplied safety, tension, stop or control components.

Product-specific notes
Not every window covering uses the same bracket.
Use the common cassette steps only when the supplied components match. These are the main differences to check before installation.

Optional upgrade
Using a No-Drill Headrail?
Do not follow the standard screw-mounted bracket steps. A compatible No-Drill Blind Headrail is measured for a suitable window recess, secured according to its supplied instructions and then paired with the compatible shade.
Troubleshooting
Stop forcing it. Check alignment first.
Most installation problems come from bracket orientation, an uneven bracket line, the cassette not engaging every latch or a product-specific transport or control step.
The cassette will not snap into the brackets.
Confirm every bracket faces the correct direction and sits flat. Check that the front lip is engaged first, that brackets are not twisted and that no bracket is positioned against an end cap or internal mechanism. Do not force the cassette.
The blind looks uneven after installation.
Recheck the bracket line with a level and confirm the cassette is locked into every bracket. Also verify that the product is centred and that the mounting surface has not pulled a bracket out of alignment.
The fabric rubs or tracks to one side.
Stop repeated operation. Confirm the headrail is level, the shade is not contacting trim or a handle and the cassette is not twisted. Contact support before adjusting the roll or motor limits.
A cordless shade will not raise or retract.
Check the product-specific instructions for a transport locking pin or initial activation step. Spring-tension adjustments vary by system; do not turn an adjustment screw unless your supplied guide identifies it.
A motorized shade does not move.
Confirm the battery is charged or the specified power source is connected, then follow the correct pairing and limit-setting guide for the motor. Never pull or force a motorized shade by hand.
The chain or safety device does not sit correctly.
Do not leave an accessible loop or remove a supplied safety component. Follow the product instructions and securely install the supplied tension device. Contact Sunny Shutter if the component is missing, damaged or incompatible with the mounting surface.

Can I install custom blinds myself?
Many standard-size cassette blinds and shades can be installed by a careful homeowner with suitable tools and the correct order-specific hardware. High, wide, heavy, motorized or structurally complex products are better handled by a professional.
What is the difference between inside mount and outside mount?
An inside-mount shade sits within the window recess and commonly fastens to the top of the recess. An outside-mount shade covers the opening and fastens to the casing or wall above it. The ordered dimensions and deductions depend on the selected mount type.
Do blinds come with screws and anchors?
Hardware packages vary. Even when screws are supplied, they may not be suitable for every wall, ceiling, frame or substrate. The installer must select fasteners that safely suit the mounting surface and the product weight.
Why will the blind cassette not click into place?
The most common causes are reversed or twisted brackets, the front lip not being engaged first, inconsistent bracket alignment or a bracket interfering with an end cap or mechanism. Recheck the supplied diagram and do not force the cassette.
Should I install the motor or pair the remote first?
For most motorized shades, securely mount the complete shade first, then connect or charge the specified power source and follow the correct pairing and limit-setting instructions. Do not manually force a motorized shade.
Are No Drill Blinds installed with the same brackets?
No. A compatible No-Drill Blind Headrail uses a separate installation method intended for a suitable inside-mount recess. Use the headrail instructions supplied with the order rather than the screw-mounted cassette steps.
Does Sunny Shutter offer professional blind installation?
Yes. Professional measurement and installation are available for qualifying local projects in Toronto, Scarborough and across the GTA. Availability depends on the order and service location.
What support is available for a shipped order?
Sunny Shutter can provide product-specific installation guidance for shipped orders. The recipient or their installer should confirm the mounting surface, use suitable fasteners and contact us before drilling if the hardware or product does not match the instructions.
