Custom door-mounted shutters - Toronto & GTA

French doorsHandle cut-outsMade to measure

French door shutters built around the handle—not in its way.

A custom cut-out creates operating space around the lever, knob or lock area so a rigid shutter can sit close to the glazed door. Sunny measures the glass trim, hardware projection, lever sweep and door movement as one coordinated assembly.

The cut-out is product-specific: its shape and clearance depend on the handle, rosette, deadbolt, glass moulding, frame profile and selected shutter system. A photo alone is not enough to finalize it.

What are French door cut-out shutters?

A rigid shutter panel fitted to a glazed hinged door.

French door shutters mount over the interior glass area and travel with the door. Where a lever, knob or lock sits close to the glass, the shutter frame or panel requires a shaped clearance zone.

The cut-out keeps the hardware reachable while the surrounding louvers provide adjustable privacy and light control across the glazed portion of the door.

01 / FRAMEMounted with the door. The shutter assembly remains on the hinged door rather than hanging across the doorway.
02 / CUT-OUTClearance around hardware.A measured opening accommodates the handle area without treating every door as the same template.
03 / LOUVERSAdjustable glass coverage.Tilt the louvers for privacy, daylight and view; exact travel depends on nearby hardware and frame depth.

More than handle centre

The lever needs room to move—and your hand needs room to use it.

A neat-looking cut-out can still fail if it clears the handle at rest but not the lever sweep, deadbolt, fingers or key movement. Sunny checks the complete operating zone before confirming the frame.

01
Lever or knob projection. We record how far the hardware extends from the door and how the lever rotates.
02
Rosette and deadbolt.Base plates, locks, thumb turns and key cylinders can enlarge or shift the required clearance zone.
03
Glass moulding depth.Raised trim around the glass affects frame position and the build-out required for louver clearance.
04
Door and panel movement.Hinges, walls, sidelights, floor stops and nearby furniture determine practical opening angles.

Professional site survey

Six checks before a French door shutter is fabricated.

Door shutters are outside-mounted over the glazed area in many applications, but the final frame and fastening method depend on the actual door construction and shutter system.

01 / GLASS AREAWidth, height and moulding. The full glass trim is measured in multiple places, including its face width, projection and profile.
02 / HARDWARE LOCATIONVertical and horizontal position.Handle pivot, base plate and deadbolt are located relative to the proposed shutter frame—not only the door slab.
03 / HANDLE MOVEMENTLength, sweep and hand space. The lever must rotate and the user must be able to grip it without rubbing the cut-out edge.
04 / CLEARANCE DEPTHLouver and tilt mechanism.Glass trim and hardware projection are checked against louver travel, tilt system and any required frame extension.
05 / DOOR OPERATIONSwing, hinges and adjacent surfaces. The shutter should not create unexpected contact with a wall, second door, sidelight frame or furniture.
06 / MOUNTING SURFACEMaterial and flat fixing area.Wood, metal, fibreglass and moulded door skins require appropriate fastening and enough suitable surface around the glass.

Cut-out planning

The smallest cut-out is not automatically the cleanest solution.

The goal is balanced clearance: enough room for daily use, without removing more shutter structure than the selected system permits.

Lever-only zone

Curved or contoured clearance.

A shaped profile may follow a lever's operating area when the lock and base plate sit outside the shutter frame. The permitted radius and offset are product-specific.

Handle and lock zone

Extended clearance.

A larger or more rectangular opening may be needed when the lever, rosette and deadbolt are close together. The cut-out must still leave adequate frame and panel support.

Limited side space

Frame position or hardware review.

When the handle is extremely close to the glass, a different frame, added build-out, alternative shutter configuration—or sometimes different door hardware—may be more practical.

Paired doors: the two shutter assemblies should align visually, but the active and inactive door hardware may require different internal clearances. Symmetry is checked without assuming identical cut-outs.

French door shutters vs shades and drapery

Choose how the treatment should move when the door opens.

The most practical treatment depends on handle access, daily traffic, desired glass coverage and the space around the doorway.

Planning pointFrench door shuttersDoor-mounted shadeDrapery across doorway
How it movesRigid frame and panel remain attached to the door.Headrail and fabric remain attached to the door.Curtains stay on the wall or ceiling and stack beside the opening.
Handle accessCustom cut-out or frame clearance is planned around hardware.Usually stays above or beside the handle; side-channel and hold-down details vary.Fabric must be moved aside before using the door.
Light controlAdjustable louvers with normal shutter light gaps.Varies from light-filtering to room-darkening fabric, with perimeter gaps.Broad coverage when closed; performance depends on fabric, lining and overlap.
ProjectionRigid frame and louvers project from the door surface.Typically shallower, but the bottom must be controlled as the door moves.Requires wall or ceiling track plus side stacking space.
Visual characterArchitectural and coordinated with nearby shuttered windows.Minimal and fabric-led.Soft, full-height and decorative.
Main constraintHardware, glass trim, mounting surface and panel swing.Fabric movement, hold-downs and handle interference.Stacking space and keeping fabric clear of traffic.

No treatment should be ordered from comparison alone. Door construction, fire/egress requirements where applicable, hardware and daily use must be reviewed on site.

Where cut-out shutters make sense

Glazed hinged doors where hardware sits close to the glass.

The application works best when there is a sound, sufficiently flat mounting surface and enough depth for the louvers and frame.

Paired French doors

Coordinated panels around two handles.

Align the shutter tops, bottoms and divider details across both doors while preserving the operating role of each lever, lock and door leaf.

Single patio or garden door

Door-mounted privacy at the glass.

A shutter stays with the active door and avoids a treatment hanging across the walkway, subject to handle and swing clearance.

Door with sidelights

One architectural shutter language.

Door and sidelight shutters can share louver size, finish and rail alignment while using different frames appropriate to each opening.

Not the same as a sliding-door shutter: bypass and bi-fold track shutters are separate systems for wide sliding doors and patio openings. A French door cut-out shutter is designed for a hinged glazed door and moves with that door.

Fit and product expectations

A cut-out preserves access; it does not remove every constraint.

Door hardware and glass moulding can limit the available shutter configuration. These conditions are part of the design—not installation surprises.

Normal product condition

Light gaps remain.

Clearance is required around the handle cut-out, louvers, panel and frame. French door shutters are not airtight seals or true blackout products.

Hardware clearance

Some louver travel may be limited.

Depending on the handle projection, cut-out and frame depth, nearby louvers may have a reduced opening range. Final movement is product- and site-specific.

Door construction

Not every surface accepts the same fastening.

Thin metal skins, fibreglass, raised moulding and internal reinforcement can affect frame choice and whether installation is suitable.

Different purpose

Not security or weather protection.

Interior shutters are window coverings. They do not replace door locks, safety glass, egress hardware, weather seals or exterior storm products.

From consultation to installation

Door, hardware and shutter planned as one working assembly.

The frame position and cut-out are confirmed before fabrication, then checked again during installation.

Step 01

Free in-home consultation.

We review privacy, light, door traffic, nearby treatments and the look you want to coordinate.

Step 02

Technical measurement.

Sunny records the glass trim, handle, lock, lever sweep, depth, mounting surface and door clearances.

Step 03

Custom configuration.

Frame, cut-out zone, panel layout, louver details and finish are confirmed before local fabrication.

Step 04

Professional installation.

The assembly is aligned and tested for handle access, lock use, door swing, panel closure and practical louver movement.

I just got roller blades installed for the new house a few days ago. From the beginning when I entered the show room talking with Alex to the end of this project, Alex did very good work on explaining everything to me and solving the issues during the process. He knows the products well and helps us to get our needs in the budget. Will recommend him to my friends who have curtains need in the future.

After four years of living in our home, my husband and I were frustrated with the wall of windows in our master. We have a vaulted ceiling with a tall arched window that didn’t allow us to place a conventional rod. While searching through Instagram I came across window coverings that Sunny shutters had done that would solve our problems as we have a baby on the way and wanted the room to be a lot darker during the summer months. I messaged them on Instagram and was told Lynn would reach out. She called me promptly and asked me to send her measurements and was about to provide a rough quote. The week after she made the long drive to Cambridge and we finalized the quote (which stayed the same as my measurements were accurate) and I picked the fabric colour and rod. She gave me some really good tips as to how we should set up the curtains for maximum light blocking. It took a few weeks as I wasn’t going to be ready for installation right away and the fabric was back ordered for a few weeks but the process in waiting was great. Lynn always answered my questions and communication was clear. Installation day was extremely smooth. It took an hour and a half and everything was organized, quick and the house was left completely clean. Prior to the man leaving he asked me to come see everything and showed me how to wrap each panel. My husband and I are wowed by the work they did. The whole room looks so much more luxurious and last night was the first time we slept well without the light waking us up at 5:30 am. Thank you so much to the team. The service, pricing and quality of work has been beyond 5 stars. I have included photos of the before to show how much these drapes have transformed the space.

I had a great experience with Lynn from Sunny Shutter. She brought samples to my home, which helped me visualize what the curtains and zebra blinds will look like and help me ensure that they will match my wall colour and decor. She also provided helpful recommendations. There is a large selection to choose from. Appointment booking was easy and I was able to get a quick appointment the next day. Appointment to installation took around two weeks and price was reasonable. Installation was quick and we were very pleased with the end results. Thank you Lynn and Sunny Shutter for you help!

French door shutter FAQ

Answers about handle cut-outs, clearance and installation.

What is a French door shutter cut-out?

A cut-out is a shaped clearance area in the shutter frame or panel beside the door hardware. It allows access to the lever, knob, rosette or lock while the shutter covers the glazed part of the hinged door.

Why do French door shutters need a handle cut-out?

Many French door handles sit close to the glass moulding. Without a cut-out, the shutter frame could block the handle, prevent the lever from rotating or leave too little room for a hand to operate the lock safely.

How is the door handle cut-out measured?

Sunny measures the handle pivot, lever length and sweep, projection, base plate, deadbolt, glass moulding and proposed shutter frame position. The required dimensions are taken relative to the finished frame—not estimated from the centre of the door alone.

Can the cut-out be curved or rectangular?

Often, but available shapes and dimensions depend on the selected shutter system. A curved profile may suit a lever-only area, while combined handle and lock hardware may require a larger clearance zone. The final profile must preserve enough shutter structure.

Will the door handle and lock still work normally?

They should remain accessible within the approved design, but exact finger space, key access and lever movement depend on the hardware and cut-out. Sunny tests handle and lock operation after installation; no universal clearance should be assumed before measurement.

Will all French door shutter louvers open fully?

Not necessarily. Most louvers can provide useful tilt control, but hardware projection, frame depth and the cut-out may reduce the travel of nearby louvers. Final movement depends on the selected system and measured door.

Are French door shutters blackout?

No. Normal light gaps remain between louvers and around the panel, frame and handle cut-out. They provide adjustable privacy and light control but are not true blackout or airtight products.

Can shutters be installed on metal or fibreglass French doors?

Sometimes. Suitability depends on the door skin, internal reinforcement, glass moulding and permitted fastening method. The door manufacturer’s requirements and any applicable warranty conditions should be considered before drilling.

Can French door shutters match shutters on nearby windows or sidelights?

Yes. Louver size, finish, rail alignment and general frame appearance can often be coordinated, while the door and fixed windows use mounting details suited to their different openings.

Does Sunny Shutter measure and install French door shutters in Toronto?

Yes. Sunny Shutter provides free in-home consultation, professional measurement, custom fabrication and installation for French door cut-out shutters in Toronto, Scarborough and many GTA communities.

Product planning note: Images are illustrative. Frame profile, cut-out shape, cut-out size, handle clearance, lock access, louver movement, panel opening angle, fastening method, light gaps and final suitability vary by door hardware, shutter system and site conditions. Configuration is confirmed after professional measurement.
