Why professional measurement matters: a nominal “30-degree” or “45-degree” bay description is not enough to manufacture the shutter frame. The actual interior geometry and obstructions must be checked on site.

Start with the architecture

Bay and bow windows create different fitting problems.

Both project beyond the wall, but the number of window sections and the direction change between them determine how shutters meet at every corner.

Bay window

Fewer sections, sharper turns.

A bay window usually has a larger centre window with two angled side windows. Window manufacturers commonly offer 30-degree and 45-degree configurations, but the finished interior angle still has to be field-measured.

Bow window

More sections, a gentler curve.

A bow window typically uses four or more similarly sized units connected by smaller repeated angles. More corners mean more opportunities for frame build-up, louver overlap or panel interference.

The practical issue: each window section normally needs its own shutter treatment. Without enough corner clearance, the frame, louvers, tilt mechanism or opening panel from one section can interfere with the next.

Angle planning, not angle guessing

We measure the window that is actually there.

A bay may be sold as a 30-degree or 45-degree window, but those labels describe the overall projection—not a production-ready shutter joint. We work from the finished opening, one junction at a time.

The goal is practical: keep neighbouring frames aligned while leaving enough room for louvers, tilt mechanisms and shutter panels to operate without colliding.

Establish the shutter line.

We identify where each shutter frame will actually sit. Trim, drywall returns, sill shape and frame depth can move that line away from the glass.

Check each corner independently.

Every included angle is recorded at the finished opening. Even a symmetrical-looking bow window can vary slightly from one junction to the next.

Plan the joint and panel movement.

The measured geometry is considered together with posts, mitred frame ends, louver projection, hinge position and the space needed to open each panel.

Frame ends can be cut to calculated angles so adjoining sections meet with a deliberate joint. This works only when the measured geometry, selected profile and installation surface support the detail.

A purpose-selected post can connect neighbouring shutter frames while managing the directional change. It can help individual shutter sections read as one continuous architectural treatment.

Panel division and support

T-post planning.

T-posts establish where shutter panels hinge or meet within a larger framed section. Their position is coordinated with window mullions, panel width, operating access and the desired sightline.

Maximum corner separation

Independent or unframed sections.

Separate frames, or an appropriate unframed layout, can reduce corner build-up when a continuous joint would restrict louver or panel movement. Small planned gaps may be necessary for reliable operation.

Answers about angles, frames and fit.

What is the difference between a bay window and a bow window?

A bay window usually has three sections with sharper direction changes, often a larger centre window and two angled sides. A bow window typically uses four or more similarly sized sections connected at smaller angles to create a gentler curve.

Why does the bay window angle matter when fitting shutters?

The angle determines how neighbouring shutter frames, posts, louvers and opening panels meet. If it is not planned with the frame depth and panel swing, one shutter section can interfere with the next.

Is there one standard production angle for every bay window shutter joint?

No. The measured corner is only part of the decision. The production detail also depends on the selected frame or post, mounting surface, joint symmetry and whether the opening is out of square. A simple two-piece mitre calculation should not be treated as a universal shutter cut.

Can I use the nominal 30-degree or 45-degree bay window angle to order shutters?

No. Those labels describe common window configurations but are not sufficient production measurements. The finished inside angle, opening dimensions, frame depth, trim, handles and panel clearances should be measured on site.

Does a bay window need one large shutter or separate shutters?

Each window section normally receives its own planned shutter module so the treatment follows the bay or bow shape. Frames, bay posts or T-posts can visually connect the modules as one composition.

What is the difference between a bay post and a T-post?

A bay or corner post helps connect shutter frame sections through a change in direction. A T-post divides a larger framed section and provides a planned location for panels to hinge or meet. The site geometry determines which is appropriate.

Will bay window shutter panels open fully?

That depends on the corner angle, panel width, frame build-up, sill depth, nearby furniture and neighbouring shutters. Sunny checks panel swing during the site survey and may recommend a different hinge, post, frame or panel layout to preserve practical access.

Are vinyl shutters suitable for bay and bow windows?
