Custom café-height shutters - Toronto & GTA

Street-facing privacyDaylight aboveMade to measure

Café shutters that screen the view in—not the daylight above.

Café shutters cover a custom lower portion of the window while leaving the upper glass open. Sunny plans their finished height around the real outdoor sightline, the window's architecture and how the room is used.

Privacy is viewpoint-specific: café shutters can block common street-level views through the lower glass, but the open upper portion does not provide full-window privacy or room darkening.

What are café shutters?

Lower-window coverage with the upper view left open.

Café-style shutters are interior shutter panels installed across only the lower portion of a window. Their louvers tilt for control within that covered zone, while the glass above remains uncovered.

The finished height is made to measure. It may align with a sash rail, mullion or exterior sightline rather than an arbitrary 50% point.

01 / COVERAGEPrivacy where the panels sit.The lower shutter interrupts direct views through the covered part of the window.
02 / DAYLIGHTOpen glass above. The upper window stays visually light and unobstructed because there is no upper shutter tier.
03 / CONTROLAdjustable lower louvers.Tilt the louvers to refine privacy, glare and view through the shuttered portion.

The privacy line

The right height comes from the view—not a fixed percentage.

Two identical windows can need different café-shutter heights when one faces a raised sidewalk and the other faces a private yard. During consultation, Sunny considers the view from both inside and outside.

01
Exterior eye level.Sidewalk elevation, porch steps, neighbouring windows and the distance from the glass change what a passerby can see.
02
Interior activity.Sofa height, dining seats, a kitchen sink or a work surface determine which part of the room should be screened.
03
Day and night conditions.Bright indoor lighting after dark can make upper-window views more noticeable than they are during the day.
04
Architectural alignment. The top rail should relate cleanly to sash rails, mullions and neighbouring windows so the result looks intentional.

Professional site survey

We measure the window, the sightline and the operating clearances.

Café shutters are visually simple, but their top line and panel proportions make small measuring decisions obvious. The layout is confirmed before fabrication.

01 / OPENINGWidth, height and squareness.Multiple readings identify taper and determine a practical inside- or outside-mount frame.
02 / FINISHED HEIGHTPrivacy line and mullion. The proposed top rail is checked against exterior views, seated views and the existing window geometry.
03 / DEPTHFrame and louver clearance.Available recess depth affects frame position, louver size and how far the assembly projects.
04 / HARDWAREHandles, cranks and locks.Casement handles, screens, trim and sill projections are recorded before panel and frame details are approved.
05 / PANEL LAYOUTProportion and access.Panel count, hinge direction and opening space are planned around cleaning and everyday window access.
06 / ROOM CONDITIONSMoisture and nearby surfaces.Kitchen sinks, bathroom humidity, heat registers and splash zones help determine whether the selected material and finish are suitable.

Café vs full-height vs tier-on-tier shutters

Choose the coverage pattern before choosing the look.

All three styles use adjustable shutter louvers, but they answer different privacy and daylight needs.

Planning pointCafé shuttersFull-height shuttersTier-on-tier shutters
Window coverageOnly the custom lower portion. One continuous arrangement across most or all of the opening.Separate upper and lower panel groups across the opening.
Primary goalStreet-level screening with upper glass left open.Consistent full-window control with fewer independent panel groups.Independent upper and lower access and privacy.
Upper daylightAlways open through the uncovered upper glass.Adjusted through the louvers; panels can also open.Upper tier can be opened separately.
Night privacyLimited by the uncovered upper glass.Better full-window coverage when panels and louvers are closed.Flexible full-window coverage when both tiers are closed.
Room darkeningNot intended for room darkening.More light control, but shutters are not blackout products.More light control, with additional frame and panel joints.
Visual effectLightest, most open upper-window appearance.Clean and architectural across the entire window.Traditional, flexible and more visually detailed.

Exact frames, panel divisions and operating options depend on the selected shutter system and measured opening.

Where café shutters work best

Rooms that need privacy below and openness above.

The best applications have a clear lower-window privacy problem and no requirement for full upper-window coverage.

Street-facing living and dining rooms

Screen common pedestrian views.

Useful when a sidewalk or neighbouring property looks into the lower part of a ground-floor room, while the upper window still offers sky and daylight.

Kitchens and breakfast areas

Privacy around the working zone.

A custom top line can protect views around a sink, table or counter without placing a full-height treatment across the whole window.

Bay and bow windows

Follow the lower sightline around the angles.

Consistent café-height panels can preserve the brightness and architecture of a bay while screening views through its lower glass.

Bathrooms need an extra privacy check: café shutters may suit some bathroom windows, but only when the uncovered upper glass cannot expose the room from a raised walkway, neighbouring window or night-time viewpoint. Frosted glass, full-height shutters or another upper treatment may be more appropriate.

What café shutters do—and do not do

A precise privacy solution, not a full-window substitute.

Clear expectations matter. Café shutters are selected for partial coverage and an intentionally open upper window.

They can

Interrupt lower sightlines.

Closed lower louvers can reduce direct views through the shuttered portion, while still allowing adjustable light and view within that zone.

They cannot

Cover the open upper glass.

Anyone with a higher or angled viewpoint may still see through the uncovered part of the window, especially when the interior is brighter than outside.

Normal product condition

Small light gaps remain.

Interior shutters require operating clearance around louvers, panels, hinges and frames. They are not an airtight seal or a true blackout treatment.

Different purpose

Not a security or exterior shutter.

Café shutters are interior window coverings. They are not designed as a security barrier, fall-protection device, weather barrier or window replacement.

Café shutter FAQ

Answers about height, privacy, light and installation.

What are café shutters?

Café shutters are interior shutter panels fitted across only the lower portion of a window. The lower louvers tilt for privacy and light control, while the upper glass remains uncovered.

Are café shutters always exactly half the window height?

No. “Café height” describes partial lower-window coverage, not a fixed 50% measurement. The finished height should be planned around the outdoor sightline, interior seating or work areas, and the window's sash rails or mullions.

Do café shutters provide complete privacy at night?

No. They provide coverage only where the shutter panels are installed. The uncovered upper glass can remain visible from higher or angled viewpoints, and bright interior lighting can increase visibility after dark.

Are café shutters blackout?

No. The upper part of the window is deliberately uncovered, and normal operating gaps remain around the shutter louvers, panels and frame. Bedrooms or media rooms usually need a different or layered treatment if darkness is important.

Are café shutters good for street-facing windows?

They can be an excellent choice when the main concern is a direct view through the lower portion of a ground-floor window. The correct height depends on sidewalk elevation, distance from the window and the indoor activity being screened.

Can café shutters be used in kitchens and bathrooms?

Often, but the selected shutter material and finish must suit the moisture and cleaning conditions. Bathroom use also requires a careful check that the uncovered upper glass does not compromise privacy from nearby or elevated viewpoints.

Can café shutters be paired with curtains or shades?

Yes. Curtains, Roman shades or roller shades can add softness, night privacy or more upper-window coverage. The layered layout should be planned so rods, shades, shutter panels and window hardware do not interfere.

What is the difference between café shutters and tier-on-tier shutters?

Café shutters cover only the lower portion of the window. Tier-on-tier shutters cover the full opening with separate upper and lower panel groups, allowing either tier to open independently while retaining the option of full-window coverage.

Can café shutter panels open as well as tilt?

Yes, in a typical hinged configuration the panels can open for window access and the louvers can tilt within the panels. The available opening angle depends on the frame, hinge direction, sill, handles and nearby walls or furniture.

Does Sunny Shutter measure and install café shutters in Toronto?
