Blackout, explained clearly

Blackout roller fabric prevents light from passing through the material, but a standard shade may still show light around the sides, top or bottom. The window, mount and compatible hardware determine how dark the finished room can become.

What types of roller shade fabric are available?

Common choices include light-filtering fabric for soft daylight, blackout fabric for stronger darkness and privacy, and solar-screen fabric for glare reduction with varying levels of daytime view-through. Availability depends on the selected collection.

What is the difference between light-filtering and blackout roller shades?

Light-filtering fabric diffuses daylight and keeps the room brighter. Blackout fabric prevents light from passing through the material, but a standard installation may still show light around the shade edges.

Do blackout roller shades make a room completely dark?

Blackout describes the fabric, not a completely sealed window system. Light can still enter around the sides, top or bottom. Mounting overlap and compatible light-control hardware can help reduce these gaps.

What are solar roller shades?

Solar shades use an open-weave screen fabric to reduce glare and preserve a degree of daytime outward view. Openness, colour and lighting conditions affect both visibility and performance.

Should I choose an inside or outside mount?

Inside mounting creates a clean recessed look when the window has enough depth. Outside mounting covers more of the frame and can provide broader privacy or light-control coverage. The best choice depends on the window and project goal.

What is a cassette or fascia?

A cassette or fascia covers the shade roll and operating components for a more finished architectural appearance. Available shapes, sizes and colours vary by roller shade system.

Can roller shades be cordless or motorized?

Yes. Compatible roller shades may be available with cordless or motorized operation. The appropriate system depends on shade dimensions, fabric weight, accessibility and product specifications.

Can roller shades cover large windows?

Many roller shade systems can cover wide or tall openings, but maximum dimensions depend on the fabric, tube, hardware and control type. Very large spans may require multiple coordinated shades.
