Light filtering Blackout & solar Motorized options

Start with performance

One clean form. Three different jobs.

Roller shades share the same minimal silhouette, but the fabric changes how they handle daylight, privacy, view and room darkening.

01

Light-filtering

Diffuses bright daylight and adds privacy while keeping the room softly illuminated.

Living · Dining · Office
02

Blackout

Blocks light through the fabric for stronger privacy and darkness; edge gaps depend on the installation.

Bedroom · Nursery · Media
03

Solar screen

Reduces glare while preserving varying levels of daytime view-through, depending on openness and colour.

Large windows · Offices · Views
Custom roller shades installed across tall living room windows
The clean look comes from proportion: consistent cassette height, aligned bottom bars and the right roll direction across every window.

Quiet at the window

Minimal shape. Considered details.

Roller shades disappear into the architecture when the fabric, hardware and mounting are planned together. We size each shade for the opening and coordinate the visible components with the room.

Top finish Open roll, cassette or fascia options depending on the selected system and design goal.
Mount Inside mount for a recessed look; outside mount for broader frame coverage where appropriate.
Control Cordless and motorized systems, with availability based on shade size, fabric and product specifications.

Blackout, explained clearly

The fabric blocks light. The installation manages the edges.

Blackout roller fabric prevents light from passing through the material, but a standard shade may still show light around the sides, top or bottom. The window, mount and compatible hardware determine how dark the finished room can become.

01
Inside mountCreates a clean recessed look, with normal clearance around the fabric and hardware.
02
Outside mountCan overlap the window frame to reduce visible edge light when the surrounding space allows.
03
Enhanced light controlCassettes, channels or other details may be available depending on the product and window configuration.

Questions, answered

Before choosing roller shades.

Clear guidance on fabrics, blackout expectations, solar screens, mounting, hardware, large windows and care.

What types of roller shade fabric are available?

Common choices include light-filtering fabric for soft daylight, blackout fabric for stronger darkness and privacy, and solar-screen fabric for glare reduction with varying levels of daytime view-through. Availability depends on the selected collection.

What is the difference between light-filtering and blackout roller shades?

Light-filtering fabric diffuses daylight and keeps the room brighter. Blackout fabric prevents light from passing through the material, but a standard installation may still show light around the shade edges.

Do blackout roller shades make a room completely dark?

Blackout describes the fabric, not a completely sealed window system. Light can still enter around the sides, top or bottom. Mounting overlap and compatible light-control hardware can help reduce these gaps.

What are solar roller shades?

Solar shades use an open-weave screen fabric to reduce glare and preserve a degree of daytime outward view. Openness, colour and lighting conditions affect both visibility and performance.

Should I choose an inside or outside mount?

Inside mounting creates a clean recessed look when the window has enough depth. Outside mounting covers more of the frame and can provide broader privacy or light-control coverage. The best choice depends on the window and project goal.

What is a cassette or fascia?

A cassette or fascia covers the shade roll and operating components for a more finished architectural appearance. Available shapes, sizes and colours vary by roller shade system.

Can roller shades be cordless or motorized?

Yes. Compatible roller shades may be available with cordless or motorized operation. The appropriate system depends on shade dimensions, fabric weight, accessibility and product specifications.

Can roller shades cover large windows?

Many roller shade systems can cover wide or tall openings, but maximum dimensions depend on the fabric, tube, hardware and control type. Very large spans may require multiple coordinated shades.

Do you measure and install roller shades in Toronto and the GTA?

Yes. Sunny Shutter provides free in-home consultation, professional measurement and installation for qualifying custom roller shade projects across Toronto, Scarborough and surrounding GTA communities.

How should I clean roller shades?

Use a soft duster or a vacuum with a clean brush attachment on low suction. Spot clean only as directed for the selected fabric, and avoid harsh chemicals, soaking or creasing the material.
