Sunny Shutter’s commercial work at Markham Pan Am Centre centres on a demanding brief: retractable blackout curtains for a large municipal gymnasium.
Wide window sections, high mounting positions and existing steelwork shaped the project. The curtain layout also needed to account for an emergency exit and a standpipe connection within the covered area.
01 / Curtain design
Every panel.

Blackout across
wide spans.
The brief combined full-blackout fabric with overlapping panel closures. Attention to the meeting edges, header position and floor clearance was central to the light-control approach.
Structure in
the fabric.
Sewn-in box pleats and chain-weighted hems were specified to give the large panels a defined shape and controlled hang. Final fabrication depended on site-confirmed dimensions.
Retractable.
Adapted to the space.
A side-to-side trolley system allowed for an open and a closed curtain position. The layout had to consider both the covered window area and the space used when panels were gathered.
02 / Track & structure
Designed around
the building.
At this scale, curtain weight, track selection and attachment details belong in the same conversation. The project package included a structural assessment and a recommended connection detail for the existing steelwork.

- The revised detail placed brackets on the interior face of the existing steel beam.

- The assessment considered curtain weight when spread across the track and gathered at the ends.

03 / Site-specific details
A precise fit.

Two locations required purpose-made openings in the curtain fabric. Both were identified in the project drawings and needed to be considered before production.
Emergency exit
An opening shaped
around the doorway.
This section called for a single curtain panel with a dedicated cut-out around the exit, rather than the paired-panel arrangement used across most other sections.

Fabric that works
around fixed services.
A separate cut-out was specified so part of the fabric could tuck behind the standpipe connection. Its position needed to be reflected in the panel’s fabrication details.

The project brief brought together fabric performance, panel identification and installation requirements.
Fabric Testing & Project SupportCurtain fabric & construction
The specification called for black full-blackout velour IFR polyester, or an equivalent or higher-performing material, with sewn-in box pleats and chain-weighted bottom pockets.
Panel overlaps and coordinated header and floor clearances formed part of the specified curtain layout.
Flame-retardant documentation
The project specification referenced Canada ULC-S109 / NFPA requirements and called for compliance documentation to accompany the drapery.
For a new project, the required standard and supporting report need to be matched to the selected fabric and configuration.
Panel identification & material references
Sewn-on labels were specified to identify the supplier, fabric, colour and panel size. The brief also required a sewn-on fabric swatch and a certificate of inherent flame retardancy at the panel’s rear corner.
Site measurement & installation planning
Final site measurements, access equipment, mounting conditions and facility protection were part of the installation scope. Work around the emergency exit and standpipe connection required coordination with the curtain fabrication details.
