What are Roman shades?

Roman shades are fabric window coverings that form measured horizontal folds as they are raised. They combine the softness and decorative range of fabric with the compact operation of a shade.

How are Roman shades different from roller shades?

A roller shade wraps fabric around a tube for a flat, minimal profile. A Roman shade lifts into visible fabric folds, creating more texture, body and decorative presence at the window.

Should Roman shades be lined?

Lining is optional for some fabrics and strongly recommended for others. It can add body, improve privacy, change light transmission and create a more consistent appearance from outside. The choice should be made with the face fabric.

Can Roman shades have blackout lining?

Yes, compatible Roman shade fabrics can be paired with blackout lining for stronger room darkening. Light may still enter around the top and side edges, especially with an inside mount.

What is the difference between inside and outside mount Roman shades?

Inside mounts sit within a suitable recess and preserve more trim. Outside mounts cover the opening and can provide more overlap, hide shallow recesses and reduce edge light, but they also occupy wall or trim space.

Can Roman shades be motorized?

Compatible Roman shade systems can be motorized. Availability depends on finished size, fabric and lining weight, hardware, power and the selected motor system, so it should be confirmed before ordering.

Which rooms work well with Roman shades?

 Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. After four years of living in our home, my husband and I were frustrated with the wall of windows in our master. We have a vaulted ceiling with a tall arched window that didn’t allow us to place a conventional rod.

While searching through Instagram I came across window coverings that Sunny shutters had done that would solve our problems as we have a baby on the way and wanted the room to be a lot darker during the summer months. I messaged them on Instagram and was told Lynn would reach out. She called me promptly and asked me to send her measurements and was about to provide a rough quote. The week after she made the long drive to Cambridge and we finalized the quote (which stayed the same as my measurements were accurate) and I picked the fabric colour and rod. She gave me some really good tips as to how we should set up the curtains for maximum light blocking.

It took a few weeks as I wasn’t going to be ready for installation right away and the fabric was back ordered for a few weeks but the process in waiting was great. Lynn always answered my questions and communication was clear.

Installation day was extremely smooth. It took an hour and a half and everything was organized, quick and the house was left completely clean. Prior to the man leaving he asked me to come see everything and showed me how to wrap each panel.

My husband and I are wowed by the work they did. The whole room looks so much more luxurious and last night was the first time we slept well without the light waking us up at 5:30 am.
